Pick #1: Alec Burleson – St. Louis Cardinals – Fewer than 0.5 Strikeouts
Burleson has emerged this season as a dangerous presence for the St. Louis Cardinals. In his sophomore season, Burleson leads the club in home runs, RBIs, and total bases. That said, his batting approach is not that of a typical middle-of-the-order batter. While he did whiff in last night’s game, he’s only struck out ten times since July 2nd (that’s 127 ABs).
While Taj Bradley can wrack up strikeouts in abundance, his strikeout rate oddly drops to a pedestrian 21.3% away from Tropicana Field (and just 19.1% on the road against lefties). Even odds on Burleson avoiding a strikeout seems like a strong way to start this slip.
Pick #2: George Kirby – Seattle Mariners – More than 6 Strikeouts
George Kirby is rapidly validating the Mariners’ decision to select him in the first round of the 2019 Draft. At just 26 years old, Kirby has been exceptional as the season progresses, currently sporting a 3.02 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and a 24.0% strikeout rate over 23 starts. He has been nearly unhittable at Safeco Field, posting a 5-2 record, 2.52 ERA and racking up 67 strikeouts in 60.2 innings at home.
He is set to face a Detroit team that has seemingly been asleep at the plate lately. They own just a .203 average and .243 wOBA since the All-Star break. This has the makings of a pitcher’s duel, and Kirby will be looking to make a statement that he’s going to be an ace for the Mariners as we head towards the postseason. Detroit’s 23.6% strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers is the tenth-worst mark in MLB. The door is open for Kirby to pitch deep here and rack up strikeouts.
