Pick #1: Ky Thomas – Kent State Golden Flashes – Fewer than 53.5 Rushing + Receiving Yards

Kent State is a winless team, entering play tonight with an ugly 0-8 record. They will play host to one of the better teams in the MAC tonight, the Ohio Bobcats. Much of Ohio’s success has been due to their solid rush defense, as the Bobcats have only allowed 117.5 yards per game on the ground this season.

Ohio currently sits as 19-point favorites here, which obviously means the game script does not bode well for Kent State to figure out their putrid rushing attack (third-worst among FBS teams). Ky Thomas has emerged with some decent performances the last two weeks, but he’s essentially been a non-factor in the passing game (one single catch over the last five games). I expect Kent State to bottle the senior running back early and often and prevent him from surpassing this very modest total.

 

Pick #2: Hayden Wolff – Western Michigan Broncos – More than 187.5 Passing Yards

This number feels way too low. Outside of a tough loss to Ohio State early in the year, Wolff has been lighting it up, surpassing 200+ passing yards in 5 of his last 7 games (and one of those was against Wisconsin’s elite defense). He’s been incredibly efficient, completing nearly 70% of his throws (68.8%).

At home in Kalamazoo, Wolff is averaging a solid 234.7 passing yards per game, and he’s got a solid group of playmakers to spread the ball around to. Jaden Nixon, a top-tier running back, will be a focal point and draw a lot of attention, but with this being a tight matchup, Western Michigan will need to rely on the pass to keep Northern Illinois’ defense honest. It’s going to be a battle, and Wolff will have to air it out to stay in the game.
