Pick #1: Preston Stone – SMU – More than 213.5 Passing Yards
After losing the bulk of his snaps to sophomore Kevin Jennings in the blowout opener, Preston Stone took back control of the QB reigns for the SMU Mustangs last week against Nevada. With a very competitive game on the books this week at home against BYU, Stone should handle almost all of the duties behind center once again this weekend. Stone chucked it 30 times for 254 yards in last week’s win over Nevada and surpassed this low passing total in 11 of his 12 starts as a Sophomore last season. I’ll start my slip here as this line looks 20-30 yards light for a guy on the Maxwell Award Watch List entering the season.
Pick #2: Cam Porter – Northwestern – More than 53.5 Rushing Yards
This game will almost certainly be ugly, but that’s Northwestern Football. Porter is the lead back in the backfield for the WildCats, and the senior RB picked up 63 yards on 13 carries in the opener against Miami-Ohio. He sailed past 54 rushing yards in each of the last three regular-season games last season.
With potential rain/wind forecasted for the Chicago area (and this game played feet away from Lake Michigan), David Braun will likely need to lean on his ground game to beat the Blue Devils. With 15+ carries well within reach for Porter, he should be able to grind his way past 54 yards rushing.
