Pick #1: Adley Rutschman – Baltimore Orioles – More than 1.5 Total Bases
After several straight tough opposing pitcher draws, the Baltimore Orioles will be ecstatic to walk through the Coors Field tunnel this evening. Tonight, they’ll face Austin Gomber, who once again sports an ERA near 5.00. Right-handed batters own a .343 wOBA against Gomber this season, and Adley Rutschman has punished left-handed pitching (at sea level) all season (.399 wOBA).
Rutchman slumped hard during the dog days of summer, but his bat is once again coming alive, and Baltimore needs him to be a key piece of their offense down the stretch. Cliff notes; Rutschman against the mediocre-at-best left-hander at Coors Field? Yes, please.
Pick #2: Framber Valdez – Houston Astros – Fewer than 5.0 Hits Allowed
It’s a tough matchup for Valdez this evening, but, simply put, he’s absolutely rolling right now. Over the past month, Valdez has excelled with an MLB-best 2.20 xFIP and a dominant 33.6% strikeout rate. His track record at Minute Maid Park also works to his advantage this evening, as he has posted a solid 2.96 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 11 home starts.
Valdez has had success against the individual pieces of this Kansas City lineup in their previous meetings and has only allowed more than three earned runs in two of his last 16 starts and just 13 hits in four starts (27.0 innings) this month. He’s well-positioned for another solid outing, making this a play I’m adding to my slips.
