Pick #1: Jake Cronenworth – San Diego Padres – Fewer than 0.5 Hits
Bailey Ober has been dominant since the All-Star break, holding opponents to a mere .136 batting average. Ober’s success is partly due to his ability to induce a nice mix of lazy fly balls (50% FB rate) and strikeouts (26.4% sK%). Notably, he’s been exceptionally tough on left-handed batters, limiting them to a .178 average and a .247 wOBA this season.
Cronenworth, a left-handed hitter, has been struggling at the plate, hitting just .196 over the last month. Given Ober’s current pitching form and Cronenworth’s mid-summer slump, this matchup presents a difficult situation for Cronenworth to break out of his hitting struggles.
Pick #2: Corbin Carroll – Arizona Diamondbacks – More than 0.5 Total Bases
After a slow start to the season, Carroll has significantly turned things around, posting a robust .395 wOBA and a 155 wRC+ since the All-Star Break. Thus far, during the month of August, he’s racked up 19 hits, 20 runs, and 11 RBIs in just 17 games – averaging 2.94 total hits+ runs+RBIs.
Tonight, Carroll will be up against Edward Cabrera, a right-handed pitcher who has struggled against lefties, allowing a .369 wOBA to them this season. With Carroll in great form at the plate combined with Cabrera’s vulnerability, he is well-positioned to exceed 0.5 hits+runs+RBIs in this matchup.
