Pick #1: Jose Altuve – Houston Astros – More than 1.5 Total Bases

Altuve was held in check last night, but he has a mouth-watering matchup awaiting him again this afternoon, where he’ll face lefty JP Sears. Sears has surrendered a .354 wOBA and 5.26 xFIP against right-handed batters this season. Altuve just so happens to have a very long track record of crushing left-handed pitching. Before last night’s game, Altuve was riding a seven-game hitting streak and had at least one hit in 16 of his previous 18 games.

Altuve leads the Astros with 123 hits this season (in 97 games), which is the third-highest mark in MLB. This also happens to be one of the best matchups he’ll have all season. Sears’ 4.94 xFIP is the highest mark in MLB among all qualified pitchers. I’ll start my slip with one of the most proven hitters in MLB.

Nathan Eovaldi – Texas Rangers – Lower than 5.0 Hits Allowed

Eovaldi was blasted by Baltimore in his last outing prior to the break, but tonight’s matchup looks far less daunting. He will take the bump looking to mow down a Chicago White Sox club that owns an MLB-worst 76 wRC+ and also a league-worth 74 wRC+ against right-handed pitching. Eovaldi has been terrific at Globe Life Field, where he owns a 5-1 record to go along with a 2.69 ERA and 0.85 WHIP over 63.2 innings. He has allowed five or fewer hits against in 10 of 11 home starts.
