Play #1: Tyler O’Neill – Boston Red Sox – More than 1.5 Total Bases
O’Neill broke out of a mini-slump in last night’s game, picking up a hit and scoring a pair of runs. He should have little problem keeping it going tonight as he’ll step into the batter’s box to face the very hittable southpaw JP Sears. Sears has surrendered an ugly .352 wOBA against right-handed batters this season and his 5.13 xFIP is the worst mark in MLB among all qualified pitchers.
Sears owns a troubling 47.1% fly-ball rate on the season, which won’t play too well with the Big Monster looming in left field. O’Neill can certainly be streaky, but he’ll enter tonight’s game with an insane .477 wOBA and .353 ISO against lefties as we pass the half-way point of the MLB season. This makes this line stand out as one to take advantage of this evening.
Play #2: Ezequiel Tovar – Colorado Rockies – Fewer than 1.5 Total Bases
Tovar is in the midst of an epic cold streak. The 22-year-old finally picked up a hit last night, which was his first one since the end of June. With that hit, he’s now 1 for 31 with 13 strikeouts this month. His opponent, Frankie Montas, tossed seven shutout innings against Colorado when they squared off to begin the month of June. In that outing, he allowed just a single hit and two walks while racking up nine strikeouts. Montas has held right-handed bats to a .200 average and .575 OPS this season.
