Early look plays from our resident racing analyst “grid idiot”!
Spa-Francorchamps (AKA SPA) is home to our next round of Formula 1, and the final round before a 1-month hiatus for Summer break. A 4.352 mi track known for its unpredictable weather, and the world-famous high-speed “Eau-Rouge” & “Radillion” corner combo. This Is a circuit that will favor the cars whose strength is higher speeds, whether cornering or on the straights SPA is a very high-speed track with only one or two corners bringing drivers under 100 MPH, & over 70% of the lap being full throttle. The teams that come to mind here are Red Bull, Williams, as well as the newly upgraded Mclaren which seems to be the new fastest midfield car on the grid at the time of writing this.
For those of you new to F1 I encourage you to watch some highlights from years past, this track is extremely challenging and dangerous, Spa has claimed the lives of more race car drivers than any other track in modern history. As recently as last month we just lost a Junior Open wheel driver, Lando Norris had a terrible crash here in 2021, and there are dozens of pucker-worthy videos of horrific car-mangling crashes. This track requires absolute commitment & precision in order to master. It will surely be a great summer send-off for the sport.
Last week out in Hungary, the DES F1 fam came very close to our first 6 man win this month. A first-lap incident allowed some free passes to drivers who wouldn’t have otherwise made forward progress, but again the Mclaren team’s upgrades kept them out front of everyone but RB. Max put a 30+ sec lead on Lando Norris in P2, to take RB/Max’s 12th consecutive victory, taking the record away from Mclaren for the previously held 11 races won consecutively. At this point, Max is so dominant could literally win not only the driver’s championship but also the constructors. ALL BY HIMSELF… THE MAN IS A TEAM OF ONE! Another “Red Bull” worth discussing, is Daniel Ricciardo’s first cornerback in an F1 car did not go to plan. After being rear-ended by a rogue Zhou Guanyu and sent to the back of the pack before ever taking his foot off the brakes. Danny drove back to a P13 finish, surpassing most of the back fielders but most importantly his teammate Yuki. This is a promising return for the beloved Honey Badger, the F1 community is certainly glad to have him back. I believe Ricciardo will be fighting for P10 for most of the season if his form keeps up, hoping to find some good value in his props.
The results are as follows;
Outright odds give us a suggestion for what the props will look like this week, Red Bull looks like the favorites (to be expected), and I won’t be touching anything RB until post-qualifying. Interestingly enough Lando is the second favorite to RB, but Piastri being a rookie I suppose keeps his projections conservative, I think he’s one to watch with the newfound speed of the Mclaren. Williams have had a tough time since their glory run at Silverstone, but this is a track that should cater nicely to their car. And with Aston Martin & Ferrari struggling with the new tire compound introduced at Silverstone, I think they have a great chance to get one. If not both cars into the top 10 this weekend. Finally, I’ll be interested to see how Ricciardo’s props look, the Alpha Tauri car is very far off the pace of the frontrunners, but after his unfortunate T1/L1 incident last weekend, I’ll be hoping the bookies go soft on his numbers.
